From the wires
Bitwig heads to the Brooklyn Synth & Pedal Expo, October 17-18 — Bitwig
Bitwig has announced it will exhibit at the Brooklyn Synth & Pedal Expo on October 17-18, sharing a Greenpoint warehouse with over a hundred synth, pedal and software makers, where visitors can try Bitwig Connect 4/12 and see what is new in Bitwig Studio 6. A DAW company renting table space at a hardware expo is the week's quiet tell: the rack and the grid are converging on the same room, and nobody is bringing an AI pitchman.

UVR 6 is coming: the maintainer posts a development update — UVR (GitHub)
The open-source stem separator's maintainer has broken a long silence with a development update: UVR 6 has become a much larger undertaking than anticipated - the interface is moving from Tkinter to PySide, the dependency stack is being modernized, and a new release is promised within six weeks. The last major release was 2023, the roadmap is still one person's evenings, and nobody has yet called it an AI product - the highest praise this desk knows.

Baud Girl FM-1+VA firmware v97 adds Bluetooth MIDI clock sync — Baud Girl
Version 97, made the current release on October 9 after an October 7 beta, lets two FM-1s sync MIDI clock directly over Bluetooth - one leads, one follows, no computer or cable in between - and restores the Flow grid sequencer in place of Version 96's Lane view. The virtual-analog engine and 64-step grid that the +VA firmware already shipped stay where they were. A changelog that names its actual changes is a small-maker luxury, and one that hands you the previous version back in the same installer is rarer still.

Hermetic Modular Capicola: an open-source time-stretch module — Synthtopia
Hermetic Modular's Capicola - a 12HP real-time stereo time stretcher built on keyframe Extrema Sampling, its firmware open source - is available now at $389.99, per Synthtopia's October 6 coverage. A time-stretch algorithm whose implementation is published for anyone who wants to argue with it in public: free to criticise, $389.99 to patch.

Kuusoutoshi Audio DrumUnveil splits a drum loop into six lanes of audio and MIDI — KVR Audio
Kuusoutoshi Audio's DrumUnveil takes a dropped-on-it drum loop and splits it into six lanes - kick, snare, toms, hi-hats, ride and crash - turning every detected hit into a velocity MIDI note, with the separated audio and MIDI dragged straight into the DAW. VST3 and AU on Windows and macOS, $49 at launch until the end of November. The break you could not unmix is now a break you can resequence.

Resilio Versio: third-party dub firmware for the Noise Engineering Versio — Resilio Versio (project page)
A developer writing as jeffebauer has released Resilio, free third-party firmware - explicitly not affiliated with Noise Engineering - that turns a Versio module into a dub-style spring reverb with a tape echo in front of it, installed through NE's own Firmware Swap web app; the project page dates the first public release, v2026.10.07, to October 7. The two effects that taught jungle how to space out, running on hardware you already own: the best kind of firmware news.

zc devices thicket opens a free public beta — r/modular
The maker posted a free public beta of thicket straight to r/modular, and the post describes a polyphonic modular synth: fifty hand-crafted nodes, first-class MPE, free while the beta runs. A synth that arrives on a forum describing itself as what it is - feedback flowing in public; the software equivalent of leaving the workshop door open.

UVI Falcon 2027 flies the nest with new oscillators and effects — gearnews
UVI's flagship hybrid instrument picks up four new oscillators - West Folder, FM Explorer, Spectral Stretch and Sample Mapping - ten effects, a new modulator and 100 presets, plus three expansions. Free for existing users, a voucher for new ones, and included in SonicPass. The Spectral Stretch name is doing a lot of work this autumn: every tool shelf now ships its own way to un-resample a break, and Falcon's arrives with the most presets attached.

Teenage Engineering says it wants to stop making synths — MusicTech
Founder Jesper Kouthoofd told Highsnobiety he is ceasing synthesizer production immediately - the original OP-1 included - because, in his words, "the products aren't the business" and the company is best when experimenting. The catch is the horizon: he admits some new projects "won't be released for five to 10 years" at least. A synth maker walking away from synths immediately, with nothing ready to replace them, leaves the market's least enviable job: pricing a collectible whose maker says the collection is complete.
